Dr. Petrick is a specialist in “Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics”. Most people are familiar with orthodontics but may not be with the term dentofacial orthopedics. After completing dental school, orthodontic specialists must complete a two to three year residency program recognized by the American Dental Association. There are nine specialties sanctioned by the American Dental Association.
Dr. Petrick’s specialty is “Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics”. Essentially, while orthodontics involves moving teeth, dentofacial orthopedics involves the guidance of facial growth and development, which occurs primarily during childhood. With both orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, what orthodontists call appliances are used – braces for orthodontics and other specialized appliances, such as expanders, Herbst appliances, and various headgears for different types of dentofacial orthopedics. Sometimes orthopedic treatment may precede braces, but often the two are accomplished at the same time.
Since Dr. Petrick is trained and experienced in both areas, he is able to diagnose any problems with both the teeth and the jaws and create a treatment plan that is appropriate for the individual.
